Why Kundalini Yoga?
Kundalini Yoga is a spiritual technology for our times. But what does that mean exactly? When Yogi Bhajan first came to the West -- (and did you know he came to Canada first? -- he was brought over by a professor at the University of Toronto) -- he famously stated that he had not come to gather disciples, but to train teachers. His aim was to make the technology of Kundalini Yoga available to as many people as possible, to prepare us for the times we are living in now.
As you may have noticed, those times are often turbulent. In 2012, astrologically speaking, we officially transitioned from the age of Pisces to the age of Aquarius. This means our position and relationship to the heavens has changed. Think of it this way: the axis of the earth, for a couple thousand years, was aimed at the constellation of Pisces, picking up its song and 'radio signal' for that period of time. You could compare the axis of the earth to its spine, and like our own spines, it is a sensitive radio antenna that transmits the frequency or vibration of the signal it's picking up to all the beings that live on it.
The Piscean consciousness has had as many manifestations as the heads of the Hydra, but one way to understand the multiplicity of its effects on humanity and the planet is to think of it as an age defined by separation consciousness -- the belief that God is separate from ourselves, outside of us, or altogether absent. This feeling of disconnection is at the root of all human dysfunction, and is reflected in every form of destruction we have ever wrought upon ourselves, each other, and the planet. If we cannot have an experience our own divinity, we are capable of every evil.
We are also emerging from the nadir of the most recent dark age, or Kali Yuga, and are currently 317 years into Dwapara Yuga, on the upswing, according to Sri Yukteswar and The Holy Science. I won't get into that here, but if you're looking for a wonderful way to contextualize the current era, I highly recommend The Yugas, by David Steinmetz and Joseph Selbie.
Going from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius is like going from 'I' to 'We', from an externalized concept of the Divine to an internalized one. We begin to realize our interconnectedness and interdependence, because we start to realize that God is not 'out there', but 'in here'. The great souls who have come to us when we needed them the most tried to remind us of that. Christ said, 'Seek ye first the kingdom of God within'. Once we begin to sense our own divinity, we become aware of others', and separation consciousness begins to dissipate. We move into unity consciousness.
Kundalini Yoga brings you into unity consciousness through its focus on awareness and the radical acceptance of all that you are. It cultivates self-compassion and a sense of internal spaciousness; it develops the Self-Sensory System, transferring reference points from the world outside to the intuitive voice of Spirit and connecting you to the harmony and flow of universal energy. It grounds you in your neutral mind. We all need to be grounded at this time so that we don't fall into the traps of projection and polarization, which only increase separation. We need all our wisdom and all our compassion to navigate now. To quote Matthew, "I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves."
